If you are a builder, architect, designer, building control officer or any other provider of services to the domestic building market, you may have a concern that YBC seeks to gain easy profit from highlighting any perceived grey areas in either the design or the construction process. This is not the case. The input YBC provides should be seen as the same role (or part of) as the project manager and his team would give on any large commercial construction project. A client may wish to employ YBC as project manager for the entire project or to select from the shopping list of services for the areas they have the greatest concern for. For the design phase, this may be helping the design team understand the client's wishes with the realisation relative to the client's budget, time frame and quality expectation or assessing the "buildability" of any design relative to the particular constraints of a location and/or necessary build sequence. With years of experience on major design and build contracts, YBC can help both the builder and designer by resolving issues ahead of meeting them at the post-design/ construction stage and so saving every parties' time and, therefore, money. If YBC is employed by the client to check on the quality of the construction work, then the best analogy should be that of Clerk of Works. Any builder with a desire to give their clients a quality product should welcome help communicating the need for avoiding shortcuts to his sub-contractors. It is not the policy of YBC to observe defects and save these up to gain future "brownie points" from the client. The aim is to help manage the project to completion with as few time and money wasting defects as is practically possible. Completing a project on the date anticipated and to the agreed budget is the goal of most builders to allow a quick move to the next project. Continual return visits to rectify defective work or satisfy the niggles of a client that feels dissatisfied not only impacts on the following order, but costs money and can damage reputations. A client that knows they are employing a builder that YBC recommends for producing good quality without undue delays, is a client that feels comfortable from the start in what, for them, can be a very traumatic time full of worry. Greater openness and effective communication at the initial stages can produce a better result for all, at a quicker pace and with greater chance of enhancing reputation by word of mouth.
